Washington’s 4th district Congressman Dan Newhouse and a group of smiling Kevin McCarthy supporters don’t look worried after the 11th vote for speaker in the U.S. House of Representatives failed to elect their guy Thursday night.

The Observer can identify two of the other congressmembers with Newhouse. The black man to the right of him in the picture is newly elected John James of Michigan. James gave his first House floor speech when he nominated McCarthy before the seventh vote.

The woman in the burgundy blazer with her back to the camera is Congresswoman Elise Stefanik of New York, chairwoman of the House Republican Caucus. She is the third-ranking House Republican.

In 2017 under House Speaker Paul Ryan and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Newhouse, a second-term congressman, was promoted from the House Agriculture Committee to the powerful House Appropriations Committee.

Voting for speaker will continue today.
