After much discussion about the method, city of Richland traffic technicians began working to make the George Washington Way and McMurray Street intersection safer for pedestrians and students riding their bikes to and from Chief Joseph Middle School by installing a new traffic light and also a flashing sign that says “Yield to Pedestrians.”
After the installation is complete, a pedestrian or biker can push a button for a walk signal that also stops left turning traffic. Recently, three students on bicycles have been struck in the crosswalks by left-turning automobiles.
After the first collision, bicycle and pedestrian advocate Francesca Maier asked for hardened center lines to prevent drivers from making the diagonal turns that had occurred when the students were struck.
City engineers determined that changing the traffic lights would be safer than hardened center lines. McMurray Street was retrofitted with left turn lanes after it was designed and constructed. It isn’t wide enough to allow two cars coming from opposite directions to safely turn simultaneously if there are hardened center lines.
City Manager Jon Amundson wrote to Maier, a former Richland Planning Commission chair and the wife of Councilmember Kurt Maier, describing the plan to install the lights before school started.
You need something at Leslie Rd and Reata Rd. To many accidents happening there.
Hi Tina,
I appreciate your comment. Judging from it and others, we have a lot of intersections in Richland that need attention. Thanks you for reading the Observer. Randy
Now do wright and Swift. Bad accident area
Hi Eric, I appreciate your comment. Judging from the responses I’ve received; a number of Richland intersections need attention. Wright and Swift may be on the list, Some of the four-way stops and flashing lights in that section of town are quite a mess. I know some are on the list for improvement, but I need to follow-up on that. Thank you for reading the Observer. Randy
Wright and Swift has been on the TIP as a priority safety project for several years. I think it’s funded to be converted to a roundabout and that’s why I don’t see it on the 2024-2029 or 2025-2030 TIPs that are on the city’s website.
Hi Francesca, I appreciate your update on plans for the Wright and Swift intersection. Eric will be pleased to hear this information. Thank you for reading the Observer. Randy
