Since the Observer posted an article about the eight LTV cameras installed around Richland, readers have asked questions about who monitors the cameras and how exactly do they work.

The Observer submitted the questions to Richland City Manager Jon Amundson and here are his responses:

Question: Who is monitoring the LVT cameras?

Answer: “The cameras are not actively monitored. A limited number of authorized Richland Police Department personnel can access the cameras and review footage as needed for legitimate law enforcement or public safety purposes.”

Question: LVT promotes the cameras ability to alert camera users to suspicious behavior. Who responds to an alert?

Answer:  …the City does not have automated alerts enabled. Accordingly, no City personnel receive or respond to automated alerts from these cameras.

Amundson emphasized once again, “As I’ve shared previously, the cameras are primarily intended to serve as a visible deterrent to vandalism, property damage, and other unlawful activity.”
